About Me!
My name is Holly Webb. I will be graduating from Houston Baptist University on December 13, 2014, with a certification in Composite Social Studies 7-12. I just finished my last season as a proud member of the HBU Huskies softball team. I currently coach an 18-U girls select softball team. I look forward to beginning my teaching career and I hope to also further my coaching career at the high school level.
Educational Philosophy
The Merriam-Webster Dictionary’s definition of school is,“an organization that provides instruction as an institution for the teaching of children.” Although I agree that a school is a place that provides instruction to teach children, I also believe that a school is so much more than that. I believe that a school is a place where a child can feel comfortable enough to grow intellectually, morally, and socially, and find themselves along the way. In order to create this type of learning environment, I have based my personal philosophy of education on progressivism and essentialism. With the right combination of progressivism and essentialism, I feel that I will be a successful teacher. My students will know how to function on their own, but also understand how to be disciplined enough to take orders; this will be useful when they have jobs and must take orders from their bosses. Under my philosophy of teaching, students will be able to become mature, well-rounded young adults as they develop intellectually, morally, and socially.

In this lesson, the students were able to get out of their desks and move around in order to participate in a simulation. The students were able to participate in partner, small group, and whole class discussions. Finally, the students were able to display their knowledge on the subject through a written assignment. The lesson was engaging and applied to all different styles of learning. The lesson also required a great deal of preparation and materials.
The students completed this assignment after learning about the Great Schism. They were allowed to choose to make either a political cartoon or a comic strip to illustrate how and why the Great Schism occurred. I loved being able to see the students' artistic abilities. I also loved seeing the many different and creative ways they showed their comprehension and knowledge of the material.
For this lesson, the students were put into groups and given a handout about one dynasty in ancient China. They worked together as a group to come up with an advertisement poster to try and convince someone to "travel back in time" and choose to live in their dynasty. We also had a whole class discussion in which the students compared the different dynasties after they presented their advertisements.
While we were learning about the Mongols, we also covered Genghis Khan. The students' assignment was to create a "Hero/wanted Poster" about Genghis Khan. The "hero" side was meant to showcase his strengths and the "wanted" side was meant to show his negative qualities. This assignment allowed students to display their art skills.

Videotaped Lesson: Japanese Feudalism Simulation
|
My philosophy of education is and will continue to be very important to me and my teaching career. It is important to stay true to your values and my educational philosphy will remind me of my teaching values.
This is a video taken the day I taught a lesson over Japanese Feudalism. The video showed the students completing a warm-up, a simulation, multiple discussions, and it ends with a writing activity. Through the students' discussions with each other it is obvious that they feel like the classroom is a safe learning environment. During the lesson, the students complete many different tasks and activities and move throughout the room. I feel that the video shows my ability to manage classroom procedures and student behavior, clearly communicate expectations for students, and create a physically and emotionally safe environment.

The fieldwork reflection paper is somthing I will be able to look back on to recall what I observed in a classroom my first year of college. I observed things I found interesting as well as things I was not very fond of and this paper is a good way for meto remember those things when I have my own classroom.

Forms of Government Lesson Plan
Holocaust TEASe
|
This was an incredibly engaging lesson about the different forms of government that developed during the time period of ancient Greece. During the lesson students were able to move around the classroom, role play, and listen to music of different genres.
Whenever teachers provide feedback to students, it is important to keep the information positive. Also, I have also found that it is very helpful to provide feedback on things the students do right instead only things that need corrections.
Assessments come in many different forms. This sample assessment tool is a formal assessment over the spread of civilizations in Asia. Assessments, in all forms, are incredibly helpful because they provide feedback to both the teacher and student.
A TEASe is an excellent way to engage students and get them excited about a new topic. The TEASe sparks their interests and creates an open learning experience.

While using multiple sources of technology students can gain a deeper understanding for the material. When the students are required to present information in a different way, they are deeply engaged in the content.

Lesson Evaluations of Teaching from both Cooperating Teacher and University Supervisor

The evaluations were a great way to determine my strengths and weaknesses. With the help of my mentor teacher and supervisor, I was able to determine the aspects of my teaching that I needed to improve on and also set goals to try and reach throughout the semester.

While completeing my Copyright Presentation, I learned many rules in regards to Copyright that I was not aware of before. It is important for all teachers to be familiar and compliant with these rules not only because it's the law, but to set a good role model for students.

Lesson Plan for Jeopardy Review Game
|
In order for the students to review for their test over Rome, I made a Rome Review Kahoot game. The students really enjoyed Kahoot; they all participated and were really engaged in the review game. They loved the fact that they were able to use their cell phones in class and also that it was a competition. Rome Review Kahoot Game
I created a Jeopardy game online for the students to play to review for their test over River Valley Civilizations. The students had a lot of fun playing the game and they retained a great deal of the information. I enjoyed seeing the students working together so that their team would answer correctly to win points.
River Valley Civilizations Jeopardy Review Game When I created the Treasure Hunt I was able to see how many helpful resources are available to teachers and students to aid the learning process. A Treasure Hunt is a great way to engage students in the material they are covering.

Using Weebly to create a unit plan is a huge help with organization. It is very easy to link everything to the one web page and then when you publish the page, anyone can see it: your colleagues, students, and the students' parents.

While writing this essay, I was able to see how important technology is to students in their learning experience. It can be so helpful when teachers take the time to use it.
